- January 16 — At the 16th Annual Cable Ace Awards, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is nominated for Best Comedy Series, Best Writing in a Comedy Series, and Best Art Direction for a Comedy Series. It loses to The Larry Sanders Show for the first two categories and Mastergate for the last one.

- March 21 — At the 66th Academy Awards, the following awards are presented:
- John Williams wins the Best Original Score Award for Schindler's List.

- April 5 — Mystery Science Theater 3000 wins the Peabody Award for excellence in television broadcasting: "For fusing superb, clever writing with wonderfully terrible B-grade movies."

- September 30 — Nationwide release of the feature film Ed Wood directed by Tim Burton. It stars Johnny Depp as filmmaker Edward D. Wood Jr. and dramatizes the production of the the films Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster, and Plan 9 from Outer Space. Martin Landau would later receive the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi.
