I'll just get my umbrella. The weather seems so changeable...

At the Earth's Core is a 1976 science fantasy film produced by Britain's Amicus Productions. It was directed by Kevin Connor.

Plot[]

A British Inventor and his daring American protégé use an elaborate vehicle to drill from Victorian England to the center of the Earth. They encounter a lost world of prehistoric beasts and primitive warriors.

Cast[]

Notes[]

  • Based on the 1914 serialized fantasy story At the Earth's Core by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first book of his Pellucidar series.
  • A subsequent story by Burroughs had his popular character Tarzan travel to Pellucidar and interact with David Innes.
  • Director Kevin Connor and actor Doug McClure had previously worked together on 1974's The Land That Time Forgot, which was used in Episode #1107. Some of the supporting cast from that earlier film also appear in At the Earth's Core. Connor and McClure would reunite in 1977 for The People That Time Forgot.

Critical Responses[]

  • Leonard Maltin wrote: "Two-and-a-half stars ... Colorful fantasy-adventure based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel ... Competent special effects make this yarn palatable."[1]
  • Michael Weldon in The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film wrote: "A childish version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' adventure, with Peter Cushing and his iron mole machine drilling into earth and arriving at Pellucidar... With lots of odd man-in-suit monsters that look like Toho rejects."
  • Roger Ebert picked this movie as his Dog of the Month on the December 21, 1976 episode of the TV movie review show Opening Soon (a precursor of Sneak Previews).
