Freaks and Geeks was a TV series that aired on NBC from September 1999 to July 2000. 18 episodes were made. It was produced by Judd Apatow, who would later go on to great success in feature films.
Set in 1980, the series followed 2 middle-class teenagers (Lindsay and Sam Weir) living in suburban Michigan. Lindsay and her friends (the "Freaks") and Sam and his friends (the "Geeks") navigated the vicissitudes of high school life while trying to find their identities.
The show was ostensibly a drama, but it had many humorous elements.
Freaks and Geeks had many connections to Mystery Science Theater 3000:
- Trace Beaulieu had a recurring role as Mr. Lacovara, the science teacher at the high school, while Joel Hodgson also appeared as a local store owner and DJ.
- Dave (Gruber) Allen was a regular cast member as Mr. Rosso, the school guidance counselor.
- Several episodes were written by J. Elvis Weinstein, who was also an Executive Producer.
