Quotes & References[]

  • "I love French fish!"

"Poisson" is French for "fish". It is spelt similarly to the English word "poison".

  • "It's Spode's underwear shop!"

In the "Jeeves" series of stories by P.G. Wodehouse, Roderick Spode is a large, overbearing, aggressive man who prides himself on his athleticism and masculinity. At one point, the valet Jeeves is able to inform his employer Bertie Wooster (whom Spode had repeatedly victimized) that Spode owned and operated a ladies' underwear shop called Eulalie Soeurs, where he sold garments of his own design. Spode's desire to keep this information secret gave Wooster leverage over Spode for a time.

  • "The Termite Terrace..."

"Termite Terrace" was the affectionate nickname given to the animation department at Warner Brothers studios during the time of the production of the original Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts. These cartoons were made in a shoddily-constructed building that was often infested with insects.

  • "Chemical Ali didn't have a stash like this!"

Ali Hassan al-Majid was an Iraqi military officer and government official under Saddam Hussein. He was made the governor of Kuwait during the first Iraqi invasion of that country and was credibly suspected of having used chemical weapons in ethnic cleansing against the Kurdish population. When the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, soldiers were given a deck of playing cards that identified highly-sought individuals. Ali Hassan al-Majid's card was the King of Spades and it identified him as "Chemical Ali".

  • "Have a friend there with a beer in case you come down bad."

A 1977 episode of the sketch comedy TV show Saturday Night Live featured a sketch in which U.S. President Jimmy Carter (played by Dan Aykroyd) was on a radio program in which he answered questions from callers on a variety of subjects with an unexpected level of expertise. One caller was a panicked young man who had taken LSD. Carter then gave him advice about how handle a bad trip, including taking vitamins and "if you have a beer, go ahead and drink it".

  • "How big are these snails we're afraid of? What are they, like, a kaiju?"

Kaiju is a term used to describe the giant monster genre of Japanese films. It is also applied to the monsters themselves, including Godzilla and Gamera.

  • "Arrr, Jim boy..."

Trace is mimicking the well-known fictional pirate Long John Silver from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island.

  • "Buddy Rich... On vibes."

Buddy Rich was a famous jazz drummer who was known for his temper. "On vibes" would seem to be a reference to the novelty song "The Intro and the Outro" by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, in which the names of the band members are said, followed by their instrument. The list is long and the names become increasingly bizarre and identifiable as people from other walks of life (e.g. "Looking very relaxed, Adolf Hitler on vibes..."). "Vibes" is short for the instrument the vibraphone.

  • "There you go, Mr. Limpet."

The Incredible Mr. Limpet is a family film that combines live-action and animation. The titular Mr. Limpet (played by Don Knotts) is a man whose wish to be turned into a fish is granted through supernatural means.

  • "Getting Nemo High."

Finding Nemo is an animated feature film about fish.

  • "Let us now join a young Edie Sedgwick..."

Edie Sedgwick was an actor and model who was known for her association with artist Andy Warhol and for her struggle with narcotics addiction.
