Debbie Downer is recurring character on the late-night sketch comedy TV show Saturday Night Live. Played by Rachel Dratch, Debbie typically appeared in happy, festive situations and proceeded to say depressing things.
  • "Later, on the set of Bagdad Cafe..."
Bagdad Cafe is a 1987 film about a German tourist who forms a new life at a secluded American truck stop restaurant.
  • "Toonces, no!"
Toonces the Driving Cat is a recurring sketch on the late-night sketch comedy TV show Saturday Night Live. Unsuspecting passengers are driven by Toonces who (accidentally or otherwise) drives off a cliff.

Mary Lynn Rajskub is an actor known for her roles on the TV comedy series Mr. Show and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and the drama 24. Mary Jo and Chris have difficulty pronouncing her last name ("RY-skubb").

Dr. Frasier Crane is a psychiatrist character played by Kelsey Grammer, first on the sitcom Cheers then on his own series. Clint Howard (brother of Ron Howard) is an actor who has appeared in several TV shows and movies. The actor in the scene resembles them both.

J.R. Ewing is the amoral oil magnate played by Larry Hagman in the TV drama Dallas.

Wallace Shawn is a short, bald actor and playwright known for his roles in My Dinner With Andre and The Princess Bride. Mary Jo seems to think the actor that she had previously likened to Frasier and Clint Howard also resembles Wallace Shawn.
  • "Do you like gladiator movies?"
This refers to a scene in the comedy film Airplane! in which the airplane captain (played by Peter Graves) asks this question to a young male passenger who has been brought to visit the cockpit.
  • "He was manufacturing plastics, Benjamin. Plastics."
Mary Jo is referring to a scene in the film The Graduate in which the recent college graduate Benjamin is advised by a friend of his parents to pursue a career in plastics.
  • "The dingo ate her baby." (and variations)
Referring to the film A Cry in the Dark about an Australian woman who was accused of killing her infant, though she claimed that the baby was eaten by a dingo. The film was also referenced in a notable episode of the TV sitcom Seinfeld.
