"MST3K Volume 10 Upgrade to 10.2" was a seminar held by Dr. Clayton Forrester to instruct viewers on how to fix their DVD set following a content snafu.
The Seminar[]
On board The Satellite of Love, Joel Robinson is giving Crow T. Robot unicycle lessons when he is interrupted by Dr. Forrester in Deep 13, who is beginning his seminar (which he informs Joel does count as class credit). Frank interjects, annoying Dr. Forrester, who is still upset at Frank for failing to clear the rights to the "Japanese Giant Lizard Monster Movie". Frank, however, has got things covered, as he has a great replacement in mind; something he can't see causing any legal hassle: Star Wars. Dr. F throws it to Joel who, along with Crow and Tom Servo, demonstrates the procedure. First, Joel shows how to remove the offending disc and, despite Crow's attempts to retain it, how to dispose of it properly. He then sets the new disc, The Giant Gila Monster in its place, throwing things back to Deep 13 where Dr. Forrester tell Frank to "Make them see the white dot".
Cast[]
- Joel Hodgson - Joel Robinson
- Trace Beaulieu - Crow T. Robot / Dr. Clayton Forrester
- Frank Conniff - Tom Servo / TV's Frank
Behind-the-Scenes[]
- Rhino Entertainment included Episode #212 - Godzilla vs. Megalon in their initial release of The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Volume 10. Unfortunately, Toho, the studio behind the Godzilla films, was not consulted and the sub-licensor who provided Rhino with the rights was not authorized to do so. This necessitated a quick withdrawal of Volume 10 from the marketplace. A little over a year later, Rhino released The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Volume 10.2, a re-issue with Episode #402 in place of Episode #212. This short feature was included on the replacement disc, which was also made available individually for those who had bought Volume 10.
- This short sketch marked the return of Beaulieu (who had not performed his characters since 1996) along with Hodgson and Conniff (who had last appeared in 1999's Episode #1001 - Soultaker.
- It also marked Conniff's last canonical appearance as TV's Frank and only appearance as Tom Servo.
- Beaulieu would return as Crow in 2013 for an episode of Arrested Development, as well as in 2014's Turkey Day and concurrent DVD release.
- Hodgson also returned in 2013 for Arrested Development before returning to the show in Season 11 as Ardy. He first returned to Joel Robinson for the 30th Anniversary Tour. Joel Robinson returned to the show in audio form only for clips of "Idiot Control" used in Episode #1205 before fully returning in Episode #1306 - Demon Squad.
- Beaulieu and Conniff would later portray Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank in a live performance at Dragon Con in what appears to be a pilot for their proposed talk show, Live from Deep 13.
- This sketch marks the first time since Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie that Tom Servo's hovering is clearly shown. It would become a staple of later seasons.
- Despite the involvement of Hodgson, owner of the "Gizmonic" trademark, Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank are seen wearing their "Deep 13" badges and not the Gizmonic Institute badges they wore during Joel's time on the show.
- All human characters are clearly older than they were at the time they left the show, although Robinson's later appearances in Season 13 make it clear he, at least, returned to the SoL at some point after initially leaving.
