A MSTie (also seen as MiSTie, MySTie, or MiSTy) is a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000. The specific origins of the term are unknown, but it is in keeping with the longstanding phenomenon of self-applied names used by fans of other science-fiction-related franchises such as "trekkies."
The earliest known official use of the term was seen in Satellite News Volume 1.2, which referred to attendees of the first MST3K fan convention as "mistys." [1] The term has been commonly used online since the beginning of MST3K online fan culture, and continues to feature in officially-recognized sources such as the Satellite News[2] and MST3K.com[3]
Beginning in Season 4 the end credits of the series included a "Special Thanks" credit for "All MSTies Coast-to-Coast". Starting with Season 9 this was changed to "ALL MSTIES WORLDWIDE", as the series had begun to broadcast in (and receive fan responses from) areas outside North America. In Season 10, the final season in which the term appeared in the end credits, the "Special Thanks" credit read "All MISTIES WORLD WIDE."
