Peter Aurness (March 18, 1926 - March 14, 2010), better known as Peter Graves, was an American actor born in Minnesota. Graves married Joan Endress in 1950. They had three daughters; Kelly, Claudia and Amanda. Graves was also the younger brother of Gunsmoke star James Arness. This fact inspired the MST3K song "Celebrity Siblings".
Peter Graves is best-known for his starring role in the television series Mission: Impossible from 1967 to 1973 and again from 1988 to 1990. He won a Golden Globe award in 1971 for his role as Jim Phelps in the series. He did not play Phelps in the 1996 Mission: Impossible feature film, and was reportedly bothered by not having been asked and by how the character was depicted in the film.
In addition to Mission: Impossible, he is especially well-known for the following roles:
- Price, one of the POWs held in Stalag 17.
- Captain Clarence Oveur in Airplane! and its sequel.
- Colonel John Camden on the WB TV drama 7th Heaven.
- Host of the documentary series Biography on A&E.
During a host segment for Episode #517, Crow T. Robot writes a screenplay about Peter Graves' time at the University of Minnesota, Peter Graves at the University of Minnesota.
Graves' final released work was narration for the video game/movie Darkstar, though his work had been recorded years earlier. The game also features several MST3K alumni.
