Star Wars is an American media franchise created by George Lucas, produced by his company Lucasfilm. The Star Wars films were initially distributed by 20th Century Fox, and later by Warner Bros. and The Walt Disney Company.
The film franchise has been referenced often on Mystery Science Theater 3000 and the films (and some other media) have become RiffTrax presentations. Mark Hamill, who has appeared on the show, is one of the stars of the franchise.
Writer/director George Lucas was heavily influenced by science-fiction film serials of the 1930s and 40s, which featured heroes including Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Commando Cody, and Crash Corrigan. As a result, Lucas assigned the films episodic numbers and titles that were inspired by those serials. The first film produced in the series was Episode IV: A New Hope, released in 1977.
In 2012, Lucas sold Lucasfilm to the Walt Disney Company, including the rights to the Star Wars franchise. Disney has subsequently produced several films and television series with minimal input from Lucas.
