The Addams Family is an American television situation comedy based on characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams for The New Yorker (which also inspired the aesthetic for Maila Nurmi's character Vampira). Unnamed in the original cartoons, the characters were given names for the TV series, which ran from September 18, 1964, to April 8, 1966.

The family consists of patriarch Gomez (a successful attorney), his wife Morticia, and their children Pugsley and Wednesday. Other family members include Uncle Fester, Grandmama, and Cousin Itt. The family is served by their tall and intimidating butler Lurch. The Addams Family was depicted as eccentric and macabre, but generally good-natured, welcoming to strangers, and affectionate towards each other.

The TV series stars John Astin, Carolyn Jones, Jackie Coogan and Ted Cassidy. The show was adapted into a television cartoon series (with the characters also appearing on Scooby-Doo) and a live-action Halloween special. Most of the cast reprised their roles.

The Addams Family was later adapted into a 1990 feature film starring Raúl Juliá, Angelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, Carel Struyken, Christina Ricci and others. A sequel was made (featuring Peter Graves), followed by another cartoon series and additional direct-to-video sequels. The franchise went onto include a stage musical, animated feature films, and a Netflix series about daughter Wednesday Addams' teenage years at a boarding school (featuring Luis Guzman and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Gomez and Morticia, and Christina Ricci as one of Wednesday's teachers).

The original TV series is known for its distinctive theme song, and for being a contemporary of The Munsters (another frequently macabre monster-themed sitcom).

Season 5[]

  • 512 - Mitchell - When Mitchell turns around and finds Linda Evans, Joel says "Uncle Fester?" (which was the name of Jackie Coogan's character).

Season 8[]

  • 822 - Overdrawn at the Memory Bank - The SOL riffs Raúl Juliá's character lamenting that his love interest doesn't speak French, a trait of Morticia's that excited Gomez. Season 9[]

  • 906 - The Space Children - The movie stars Jackie Coogan and contains several Addams Family references such as putting a light bulb in Coogan's mouth, which was a recurring Addams Family gag. Cousin Itt is also mentioned.
