The Asylum is an American film-and-television production company based in Burbank, California.
The Asylum is known for producing quickly and cheaply-made films (mostly in the action-adventure, horror, and science-fiction genres) which typically are not released in theaters and instead go directly to home video, streaming, or television. These films are profitable, but are generally not highly-regarded for their quality or artistry.
The Asylum is also known for their habit of producing "mockbusters", films that are similar in name and aesthetic to other, more high-profile recent films (i.e. Transmorphers).
The Asylum's most successful franchise is the Sharknado series of films, which were co-produced with SyFy (formerly The Sci-Fi Channel) and later became a RiffTrax Live! presentation (as did the first sequel).
