The Unearthly

Professor Charles Conway is an amoral scientist attempting to develop a method of prolonging human youth and vitality by creating "the 17th gland". Ignoring scientific ethics, his research subjects are people who have no family and are under the impression that Conway can cure their depression.

Conway's research is unsuccessful and his subjects are turned into grotesque monsters. Some of Conway's patients begin to learn the truth about his scheme and intend to stop him.

Notes[]

  • Tor Johnson's son Karl appears as the largest mutant.
  • The Lobo character here (who can speak) was created by writers Mann and Black. He is a different character than the mute Lobo played by Tor Johnson in the Ed Wood Jr. films Bride of the Monster and Night of the Ghouls.
  • Screenwriter Jane Mann was the wife of director Boris Petroff.
  • This film was released as a double feature with Beginning of the End, which would be used on Mystery Science Theater 3000 during Season 5.
  • Both Trace Beaulieu and Kevin Murphy have expressed particular hatred towards this movie. In The Amazing Colossal Episode Guide, Murphy writes that he had a violent reaction to the randomness of the sudden appearance of the mutants at the movie's finale.
  • Lobo's line "Time for go to bed" became a running gag, eventually serving as the punchline for an extended bit during the RiffTrax presentation of Plan 9 from Outer Space.
  • Co-writer John D.F. Black would later write the notable Star Trek episode "The Naked Time", as well as the original feature film Shaft.
